For the last few months, I have been meaning to revamp my website. And in the last few months, the only step I have taken to actually doing that is throwing together a single-page mini-site, to show off during an interview last month. I built it in less than 72 hours, it wasn’t the least bit responsive, and afterwords I didn’t touch it even once. So I took it down, and replaced it with this blog.
If you know me, you may know that I have a special love for WordPress website and blogs. If you didn’t know that, now you do. I love the WordPress platform, because of the flexibility it offers, and the seemingly limitless ways in which you are able to customize it. It has been my unwavering intent to built out my new site as a WordPress site. I still plan to do that.
So, why the blog? I’m guessing you didn’t build this…
You are correct. I did not build this theme; I simply plucked it out of a list I was offered. But is serves a purpose. For starters, it’s not a horrible theme. I actually like what I’ve seen of it, quite a bit. Secondly, building out an entirely new site from scratch is going to take some time – I’m planning to give myself until the end of the year, and I don’t think that’s being at all generous – so I need somewhere to put my thoughts in the meantime. I have been wanting to start blogging regularly for a while now, but without any place to really put my thoughts, I have put off starting. (I have a Medium account, I really have no excuses.)
With this blog, I plan to add regularly thoughts, and updates on my progress, until the new site is finished. Since both are on WordPress, the conversion from one to the other will be fairly straightforward, and I won’t have to worry about losing content in the migration.
So, what’s the game plan?
Glad you asked!
Right now, my game plan is to move one step at a time, until I have my ideal site up and running. Now, I tend to set pretty high standards for myself, which tends to slow me down. And I also have a five-month-old daughter, who slows me down even more than I could possibly slow myself. So it’s going to be a slow journey. I know that, and I’ll admit that freely. But I am hoping to have something ready by the beginning of 2019.
I am currently in the beginning stages of this project, overlapping some “Discovery” work, with some “Design” work. I haven’t even began to think about touching development yet. After development is complete (or at least well on its way), I’ll also have to worry about content creation, and asset gathering – essentially, having things ready so I don’t launch an empty site. Like I said earlier, the posts I have between now and then will (hopefully) transfer to the new theme easily, so that content will be available, if nothing else.
Given that I am working a full-time job, and being a mommy and wife when I’m at home, I’d say the 15 weeks we have between now, and the end of the year is not only not overly generous, but probably a little on the tight side; so if I’m not able to roll out the full site at the beginning of the year, my goal is to at least roll out the blog portion of it, so I will still be able to blog.
I’m really looking forward to having this project to work on, and update everyone about. The last few months – the last year, really – has been all pregnancy- and baby-related, and I really think it will be nice to force myself to do this thing just for me. I’m going to aim for weekly updates, but hopefully I’ll be blogging more often than that on the whole.
